Have you ever looked at a card sketch and wondered how many different ways you could bring it to life? That’s exactly what inspired today’s projects!

One of my favorite things about card making is taking a simple layout and turning it into something completely different just by changing the colors, stamps, embellishments, and finishing touches.

Today, I’m sharing two handmade greeting cards inspired by the very same card sketch. Although both cards follow a similar layout, each has its own personality! It’s a wonderful reminder that a card sketch is simply a starting point. The creative possibilities are endless!

Starting With a Card Sketch

If you’re unfamiliar with card sketches, think of them as little road maps for your card designs. A sketch gives you a basic arrangement of shapes, layers, and sentiment placement, but leaves all the fun creative decisions up to you!

You can follow a sketch closely or use it as inspiration to create something uniquely your own. For today’s projects, I started with a layout featuring three circular elements and a horizontal sentiment area.

Let’s see how I interpreted that inspiration in two different ways!

Design #1: Sending HUGS with Beautiful Floral Layers

For my first card, I decided to give the sketch a soft, floral interpretation.
Rather than using traditional circles, I created three beautiful floral arrangements that follow the general placement of the sketch. I used elements from Bloom Boutique Suite Collection.

This design is a wonderful example of how you can take basic shapes from a sketch and reinterpret them using your favorite dies and embellishments.

Design #2: A Modern Thank You Card

For my second card, I wanted to create something with a completely different feel while still using the same sketch for inspiration. This time, I kept the circular elements more prominent, creating a clean, modern design using the Gears & Textures Bundle.

I love how this version feels completely different from the floral HUGS card, even though both started with the same inspiration! And… did you notice I used the same 3 colors for each card: Pool Party, Highland Heather and Secret Sea.

One Sketch, Endless Possibilities! That’s the beauty of card sketches! You don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to make a handmade card.

ACTION: Try taking a favorite card sketch and making two or three cards using different supplies:

  • change the colors
  • switch out the shapes
  • experiment with patterned paper
  • use different embellishments
  • change out your ribbon
  • use a multitude of greetings

You might be surprised by how different your finished projects look!
Give It a Try!

I’d love to help you find the perfect supplies for your next project!
